Support for German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives has dipped below the 30 percent mark for the first time, a poll showed on Tuesday, with her Social Democrat (SPD) coalition partners gaining slightly a year before a federal election. "The recent developments in Ethiopia have put the integrity of the nation at risk", the prime minister said. "Ethiopia is committed to have a multi-party democracy as per our constitution".
German government spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer has said Merkel will also "of course clearly address human rights" in Ethiopia.
The violence prompted the government to declare a nationwide state of emergency on Sunday.
Last week, protesters ransacked or burned about a dozen mostly foreign-owned factories, flower farms and other sites, accusing the government of building on seized land and stifling opposition. One American was killed in a rock attack.
Activity at North Korea nuclear site fuels test fears
FILE - Flags of China and North Korea are seen outside the closed Ryugyong Korean Restaurant in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, China. Kim has overseen three nuclear tests since assuming office in 2011 with two of them being carried out this year alone.
Merkel has described Africa, with its population of 1.2 billion people, as "the central problem" in the migration issue, and last month said the European Union needed to establish migrant deals with North African countries along the lines of the Turkey deal. Ethiopia is one of the world's largest hosts of refugees, with hundreds of thousands arriving from nearby Somalia, South Sudan and elsewhere. The protesters have been demanding more freedoms from a government that has been accused of being increasingly authoritarian. The UN human rights office has asked for access to allow independent observers into the most troubled Oromia region. Even though Merkel defends her immigration policy and calls on all political parties to fight against xenophobic and Islamophobic rhetoric, her support is gradually diminishing in the German parliament and among political parties.
Pressure has grown on Ethiopia since the stampede, and further protests last week targeted both local and foreign businesses suspected of having ties to the government.
Merkel also inaugurated the new African Union Peace and Security Council building in the capital, Addis Ababa, constructed with German funding of 27 million euros.
