A Pennsylvania mom who became "obsessed" with the vegan diet has been charged with endangering her 11-month-old son.
"She was going to live on water and sunlight", Hawk's sister-in-law Brandy Hawk recalled her saying, according to the news station.
She said Elizabeth Hawk claimed the child just had allergies, but the boy's father, who is estranged from the suspect was unconvinced, and ultimately made a decision to bring the child to a state child welfare agency. The boy's father, Jerry Hawk, noticed his son's issues and took him to medical authorities for a diagnose. The couple's other two children are also with the father now. The father has the boy's custody now. Elizabeth has been released on the basis of her own recognizance and will appear in court in November.
As for Elizabeth, despite being 5 feet and 9 inches, she only weighs 90 pounds due to her strict vegan diet. Although the now estranged mother has been summoned to court, it is not known when she will make an appearance. People reported court records revealed that the baby was examined on August 16 by a hospital pediatrician from West Virginia, who said the alleged neglect of the rash was "inhumane" because it was causing the child so much discomfort. And kids may feel full on high-fiber vegan food, but not get enough calories to thrive, so parents need to give them high-calorie foods like bananas, hummus, and peanut butter.
