Police say 33-year-old Kirk Figueroa was wearing body armor when he opened fire on police late Wednesday with what Commissioner William Evans called a "tactical shotgun". He added the emergency first aid was "instrumental" in getting the injured officers to the hospital quickly.
Governor Charlie Baker and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito released a statement following the shooting that said, "Governor Baker and Lt. Governor Polito are shocked and saddened to learn of last night's horrific incident and their thoughts and prayers are with the police officers and their families".
The two wounded officers were hospitalized in "extremely critical condition" early Thursday morning.
"I ask the city and the region to please pray for them", Conley said of the wounded officers. Nine other officers were being treated at Tufts Medical Center for trauma, stress and minor injuries.
"It just impacted me because this is one of the best neighborhoods in the area", said Rodriguez, who lives in East Boston.
Footage taken by neighbors of just "some" of the shots revealed 11 in quick succession. During the incident, the neighborhood was sent into a lockdown, with residents told to stay in their homes because police were unsure if there was a second shooter.
