Investigators were trying to determine if the driver of a bus that crash and killed more than a dozen and injured dozens more near Palm Springs was in the casino with passengers beforehand.
The tour bus belonged to USA Holiday, a Los Angeles-based tour company, which only owns one bus and has one driver licensed to transport passengers, according to records from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
"There's no indication whatsoever that the driver applied the brakes", said California Highway Patrol Border Division Chief Jim Abele, citing the power of the impact and the fact that no skid marks were found.
"The speed of the bus was so significant that when it hit the back of the big rig ... the trailer itself entered about 15 feet into the bus", Abele said.
The disclosure came a day after a California Highway Patrol official said there was no indication that the bus driver, Teodulo Elias Vides, applied his brakes before striking the truck that was creeping along at 5 miles per hour because of road work in the area.
