On Sunday, Pakistani Rangers had pounded BSF posts and civilian areas using small arms and mortars shells in continuous ceasefire violations along the International Border (IB) in Samba, Kathua and Jammu districts, prompting BSF to retaliate.
"Four Pakistani posts have been destroyed in a massive fire assault in Keran Sector", an army official said. However, the Kupwara encounter resulting in the death of the soldier and the mutilation was directly supported by the Pakistan Army, they said.
However, Pakistan has resorted to firing and violated ceasefire multiple times following the attack.
The BSF is on maximum alert in Punjab following recent ceasefire violations and Pakistan-backed terrorism incidents in neighbouring Jammu and Kashmir. The army has said "the incident will be responded to appropriately", adding the attackers had fled into Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir "under the cover of heavy firing by Pakistan army".
Pakistan said the operation never happened and accused India of inventing it to divert attention from its crackdown on protests in the part of Kashmir it controls. Pakistani troopers managed to evacuate the injured trooper in the vehicle amidst exchange of fire, the officer said.

Earlier, a top BSF official had said that the jawan was killed in firing by Pakistani troops.
"This barbarism is a true refletion which pervades official and non-official organisations across the border".
Since India carried out surgical strikes and destroyed seven launch pads in Pakistan-administered Kashmir in September, Pakistani forces have reportedly been targeting Indian posts.
