A pilot ejected safely and was rescued by a rescue helicopter after a Russian fighter jet crashed Monday into the Mediterranean Sea near the coast of Syria.
The Russian Defense Ministry blamed a technical failure for the crash of the jet, a MIG-29, according to a ministry statement carried by the Interfax news agency.
"The health of the pilot is not in danger". The MiG-29KUBR is a two seat aircraft, but it appears there was only one crewman aboard when it went down. The MiG-29K is a multi-functional plane developed in the Soviet era and is used to strike targets both in the air and on the ground. It also deploys Sukhoi bomber planes in Syria.

If they continue to play like they played Sunday, the Steelers still will be a factor in the AFC. The win gave Dallas their 8th win in a row, and the Steelers' their 4th loss in a row.
Land versions of the MiG-29 were built in the 1980s but the MiG-29K underwent limited testing during the Cold War, and Russian Federation only produced a few of them in the early 2000s.
A RUSSIAN fighter jet has crashed into the Mediterranean after launching from an aircraft carrier near the coast of Syria yesterday, it has been reported.
Shoigu, speaking to President Vladimir Putin in southern Russian Federation, said the strikes would continue. The flotilla has sparked concern from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation that it will be used to take part in air strikes on Syria. Russian Federation has been flying a bombing campaign in Syria for the past year in support of its ally Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and has deployed a naval contingent to back up its operation. "Today, it launched Kalibr cruise missiles on [terrorist] targets that had been confirmed by intelligence data and determined in advance", the minister said at a meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin with top officials of the Russian Armed Forces. The ship was also denied entry in Spanish territory and Malta over concerns that it would contribute to the bombing of the Syrian city of Aleppo.
