During a Tuesday evening press conference, Wayne State Police Chief Anthony Holt said Officer Collin Rose was shot shortly after radioing to say he was approaching a man while investigating vehicle robberies.

The suspect is known to the Wayne State police and other area departments.
"We have an American hero right now suffering from a gunshot wound we are asking for prayers", Chief James Craig said. He was in surgery at Detroit Receiving Hospital as of 8:25 p.m.
The shooting is hitting the 65-member police department hard, university President M. Roy Wilson said at the press conference. Rose, 29, is a canine officer who has been with the force for five or six years. "All of our thoughts go to the family, to his fellow officers".
