The billionaire businessman and United States president-elect was pushed into a tight spot after the so-called National Policy Institute (NPI) held a conference on Saturday in Washington, close to the White House.
In a far-ranging interview with the New York Times, the U.S. president-elect was quoted as saying: "I condemn them".
US President-elect Donald Trump has renounced the "alt-right" white supremacist group that has celebrated his election to the White House with Nazi salutes and cries of "Hail Trump!".
Trump offered up the condemnation of the alt-right, a far-right political movement rife with white nationalist, anti-Semitic and racist ideologies, after The New York Times' executive editor Dean Baquet asked Trump if he feels he did things to energize the alt-right.
People in the myriad "alt-right" communities that have flourished online in recent years are also expressing their displeasure that Trump appears to have abandoned the most extreme of his policies - at least for now - such as building a wall and prosecuting Hillary Clinton. The Atlantic magazine, which is recording footage of Spencer for a documentary they're working on, also published a video of the same event showing audience members apparently giving the Nazi salute.
"It's not a group I want to energize", Trump said.
The SPLC describes NPI as a white nationalist hate group.

"There's one part of the alt-right movement, my understanding is, that thinks America is for white Europeans", Board of Rabbis of Sacramento president Seth Castleman said. "I don't want to energize the group, and I disavow the group". It's only the beginning of the trash the alt-right spews. "Mr. Trump will be a president for all Americans".
'Breitbart is just a publication, ' he told the Times journalists.
However, he has not attacked the issue with the zest he has shown in his criticism of Saturday Night Live, the cast of "Hamilton" or the New York Times.
Spencer said without an intellectual vanguard that white nationalists can provide, Trump would have a meaningless tenure mired in the mainstream conservative movement that hes railed against. "It is our inheritance and it belongs to us".
Terror is growing over the rise of the white supremacists, who held a conference in Washington, DC, on November 20 to discuss strategizing to claim bigger recognition in politics. He sometimes used his Twitter account to distribute comments and links from white supremacist accounts, including a famous quotation from Benito Mussolini, the 20th-century fascist leader of Italy. Trump denounced the group in an hour-long sit-down interview with The New York Times at the newspaper's Manhattan headquarters.
"The Holocaust did not begin with killing; it began with words", it said.
