On Saturday, Tom Herman became the head coach of the Texas Longhorns, shortly after the program officially fired Charlie Strong.
Texas athletic director Mike Perrin issued a statement about Strong's dismissal.
Strong was a landmark hire for Texas in 2014, an up-and-comer who had earned his shot at one of the nation's top programs after a four-year record of 37-15 at Louisville.
In a clear "mic drop" moment, he didn't hold back when asked about the pressures Charlie Strong repeatedly references in his tenure as head coach of the Longhorns. The Longhorns had a decade-long run of 10-win seasons under Mack Brown from 2000-2009, a span that included two Big 12 championships, one national championship and playing for another. Hiring Herman gives them a coach with well-established Texas ties and a coach whose staff has been actively recruiting the state and region for the past two cycles. Despite swirling reports that he would be fired, school administrators had pledged no decision would be made until after the final game. Texas has signed just seven players to its class of 2017 as Strong always emphasized late pushes in the recruiting season. It's been common knowledge for some time that Texas was his dream job, so I can't imagine him being unprepared for making this leap to the big show after putting himself in the best position possible to reap the rewards if the job came open eventually. I accept full responsibility for that, but know in my heart that we accomplished our primary goal, which is the development of young men. "Once you've proven yourself to us as a bona fide dude, a real guy, a guy that we could trust and count on, then the love is limitless". "We are confident we will find the right individual who will support the young men who are and have committed to this program and who will also support our mission of building Champions for Life, both on and off the field". He'll replace Charlie Strong, who was sacked Saturday after three consecutive losing seasons. "I also want to take this time to thanks Coach Brown, you're a mentor and a friend..."
Houston's Herman leaving for Texas
Following a three-year stint as Ohio State's coordinator, he left for his first head-coaching job at any level with Houston.
Oscar Giles, who has served as the Cougars defensive line coach for the last two seasons, and Corby Meekins, who spent the last two season coaching tight ends and fullbacks at Houston, were two coaches with Herman.
Herman said he learned a lot under Meyer and plans to incorporate those experiences as Texas' head coach. Well it means there is legitimate chance they are able to get a real shot in the arm on the recruiting trail now with things being stagnant, as the team struggled down the home stretch and stability of the coaching staff came under fire. The Cougars are 9-3.
