FirstEnergy Stadium, home of the Cleveland Browns, will host the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup and the United States Men's National Team as part of a Group Stage doubleheader on July 15, as announced today by the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF).
"With matches also set for some of our more popular venues over the years, such as Dallas, Los Angeles and NY, next year's Gold Cup will highlight the top-tier sporting status of global soccer across the nation".
Other nearby host cities for the 12-team tournament, to be played July 7- 26, include Pasadena, Santa Clara and Phoenix. It will be the first time that a Gold Cup match has taken place in Nashville.
Both those games were worldwide friendly matchups. The Alamodome in San Antonio is one of four first-time venues for the competition. With 23,535 fans in attendance, it marked the largest crowd ever to watch a WNT game in Ohio.
CONCACAF announced the venues for the 2017 edition of the Gold Cup and Men's worldwide soccer is returning to Cleveland. "I expect that we will once again see heavy turnout for this game, further enhancing efforts to recruit Major League Soccer to Nashville".
"This is more great news for Nashville as we embark on our quest to become a world-class soccer city", said Mayor Megan Barry. "These cities have all proved ready and eager to host our region's marquee soccer championship, and welcome world class worldwide soccer next summer". "Due to the invaluable partnerships with the City of Cleveland, Cleveland Browns and Columbus Crew, we will be able to show the world Cleveland's passion for soccer". "See you there, and go United States of America!"
