In Elizabeth, a fight in the food court broke out Monday morning, leading some to believe shots had been fired after a chair was thrown and struck the ground. Five juveniles were arrested.
Fire officials say a man and a police officer were exposed to the pepper spray and received medical treatment. Police say it started with a post on social about a fight planned at the mall and escalated from there.
About two hours later around 8 p.m., Farmington Police told FOX 61 a fight broke out in the lower-level center court at Westfarms Mall in West Hartford, CT.
The mall closed for the rest of the day, and will reopen Tuesday. Traditionally, one of the biggest shopping days of the year, police were called to many shopping centers in response to disturbances.

Post-Christmas brawls swept across malls around the country and sent shoppers scrambling toward the exits Monday.
"Public is asked to avoid the area unless you need to pickup a family member", police tweeted at 5:25 p.m.
Shortly after officers ordered the teens to disperse, police said a large fight broke out in the mall as well as several smaller skirmishes.
The department said in a Twitter post that no officers or customers were injured. Police do not yet know of a motive for the fight. They were treated at the scene and transferred to local hospitals for additional evaluations, he said.
