Prior to the WWE Title match between Styles, Baron Corbin and Dolph Ziggler, Cena announced that he would face the victor at the first pay-per-view of 2017. He would speak to the fans about being back and not leaving WWE for Hollywood.
It seems like Taker is on a collision course with John Cena at WrestleMania, possibly with the WWE Championship on the line. Cena issued a challenge to face the WWE world champion at Royal Rumble 2017. After multiple jobs to Styles on pay-per-views, it's widely expected that Cena will win the title at the Rumble, with his rumored opponent for WrestleMania being Undertaker. If so, Cena could end up falling to a third loss to Styles and hamper his chances at winning the championship again.
But lo and behold, the Undertaker emerged from Death Valley last month to help commemorate SmackDown Live's historic 900th episode. Live and about his future in the WWE, his past, American Grit and was also asked about the potential of a big match with the Undertaker that many people have been buzzing about for quite a few years. But the Undertaker added a level of intrigue to the storyline when he told Team SmackDown that they'd have to answer to him if they lost.
John Cena says previous comment about The Rock was 'stupidest stuff ever'
Styles closed out "SmackDown Live" by pinning Ziggler and retaining the belt. The SmackDown stars avoided any repercussions, and the Undertaker hasn't set foot in a WWE ring since. AJ Styles later hit the Phenomenal Forearm on Corbin and pinned Ziggler to retain his WWE championship. It's not completely clear whether the two are related, but it's awfully coincidental. And if so, could they involve AJ Styles? Before Styles could savor his win, John Cena came rushing to stare down the champion.
Cena also talked about the Smackdown brand which was able to evolve around all the members of the brand instead of a one-man show like Raw was at one point. Tying the record still appears to be part of the plan, but in a different way than originally scripted.
