But the deteriorating health of patriarch Dr. M Karunanidhi has forced the party to look at younger leaders.
Today, Duraimurugan, the first secretary of the DMK, broke down while inviting Stalin to take over and lead the party.
On Tuesday, Stalin claimed that both AIADMK and BJP governments have been spreading false propaganda against DMK and Congress blaming them for the ban, as the verdict was passed when the UPA government was in power at the Centre.

Doctors advised the 92-year-old Karunanidhi not to attend the meeting, prompting his absence in the General Council which he continuously chaired since he took over as president in 1969 after founder Annadurai's demise.
The move comes just days after the ruling AIADMK elected Sasikala Natarajan as the party's general secretary following the death of J. Jayalalithaa on December 5.

Sasikala met party workers at the AIADMK headquarters on Wednesday. "Thambi Vaa." (Brother come...) exhorted a tearyeyed Durai Murugan saying that the entire party was now ready to obey his orders and accept Stalin's leadership.
He said it was not a post, but a responsibility and that he would lead the party with the guidance of Mr Karunanidhi and other senior leaders.
Stalin reminded the General Council that his rise to the top post was not a sudden occurrence, but after slogging for DMK for almost 50 years and something which the top leadership had thoroughly discussed.
He became the party's Youth Wing Secretary in 1984 and since then he has been holding the post despite advancing years. "I fought elections and won", Stalin said.
Dwelling on the circumstances surrounding his elevation, he said Karunanidhi who had taken ill should fully recover.
