High school senior Allie Dowdle learned that awful lesson recently when her parents, after seeing a picture of Allie's black boyfriend Michael, were not happy. I'm 18 years old and a high school senior at a local private school, where I've maintained a 4.0 GPA since 9th grade and have taken 5 AP courses.
Though the GoFundMe had received more than 300 donations as of Thursday evening, some commenters said that the campaign to have others pay for her education was offensive and smacked of privilege.
She's set up a GoFundMe page detailing the feud and her current lack of resources. About a month ago, Allie brought Michael to see her parents in an attempt to reconcile with them, though this time, their reaction was even more extreme.
Allie, who lives in Memphis, Tennessee, showed her parents a photo of him, and they immediately said she could not date him.
"My dad did not give me an option: he told me that I was not allowed to see Michael ever again", she says. Because of skin color? It wasn't a quiet 'no, ' either. I'll never forget the yelling my parents did, when they expressed how disappointed they were in me, that I could do so much better. "I've been applying for scholarships and have tried to get a job", she continued, "but I am still living under my parents' roof because I have nowhere else to live, and my dad has done everything in his power to make the world hard for me". This didn't deter Allie and Michael keeping their relationship on the low, but after Michael tried to reason with Allie's parents face-to-face around Christmas, they totally cut Allie off, stripping her of access to her savings account, her auto, phone, and most importantly forcing her to pay for her college tuition on her own. Marissa Kizer queried how helping pay for her college tuition helped to curb racism.
William Peter Blatty (1928-2017)
Blatty not only wrote the original Exorcist film, but he also directed the third instalment of the franchise. The film was nominated for Best Picture at the 1981 Golden Globe Awards, though lost out to On Golden Pond .
Dowdle claimed she needed the money because her parents cut her off when she announced that her boyfriend is black.
But he said there were "issues" involved with biracial dating in the south of America and he'd cut his daughter off because she'd started dating black student Michael Swift in secret. While a black boyfriend is not his "preference" because of issues with interracial dating in the South, Bill said it's time his daughter grew up.
She said that she is unable to get a job because she doesn't have consistent transportation in her rural town, which has a population of around 6,400 people.
Allie wrote in an update on her GoFundMe that she never meant to shame her family.
