Obama stressed that Iran's nuclear program "faces strict limitations and is subject to the most intrusive inspection and verification program ever negotiated to monitor a nuclear program".
Iran's deputy foreign minister says the nuclear deal between the Islamic Republic and world powers "will not be renegotiated" ahead of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump taking office this week. But the report also acknowledges the bumpy road of implementation over the past year, including several minor technical violations by Iran, subsequently remedied, and problems with sanctions relief.
"This is [an] inaccuracy to assume that the JCPOA will make Iran and the USA embrace a détente and a thaw in decades-old ice in bilateral relations; we just managed to negotiate our nuclear deal", and no changes will be made, he stated. Iran ramped up both oil production and investment in the sector after the deal. We still have serious differences with the Government of Iran, and will continue to push back on its support for terrorism, disregard for human rights, and destabilizing regional activities.
Araqchi made the remarks at a press conference in Tehran on Sunday, to mark the first anniversary of the implementation of the nuclear deal where he said that the 2015 deal had ruined attempts by the United States and Iran's enemies to portray a "false image" of the Islamic Republic using the country's peaceful nuclear activities. "Moreover, the Iran deal must be measured against the alternatives - a diplomatic resolution that prevents Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon is far preferable to an unconstrained Iranian nuclear program or another war in the Middle East".
Failing that, Trump should steer clear of the deal entirely in the run-up to Iran's presidential election this spring, which will pose a test for the country's moderate government, she added.
