Two US defence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP the Pentagon was not seeing signs of any "imminent" launch.
With an eye on the North Korean missile threat the Pentagon in 2013 deployed the ground-based Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system on Guam, and the administration last year approved THAAD deployment in South Korea, by later this year.
Pyongyang is likely to test-launch a new ballistic missile with a 1,550-mile range but claim it successfully launched an ICBM which has a range exceeding 3,400 miles, experts said.
He said, "Judging by earlier behavior, they usually like to greet a newly elected American president with some kind of nice surprise like a nuclear (test) or missile launch".
Pyongyang's missile programme and its pursuit of nuclear arms have seen it repeatedly sanctioned by the UN Security Council.

"It's also possible that they are simply conducting field exercises with no plans to launch, or the option to launch if decided", said Pollack.
Early previous year, Pyongyang said it had successfully conducted a hydrogen bomb test.
The Washington-based think tank, 38 North, also reported Thursday that Pyongyang had restarted operation at its Yongbyon nuclear facility where it is believed to be able to reprocess polonium used in its nuclear warheads.
Despite Kim Jong-un's disturbing statements, Donald Trump is 100% convinced that North Korea will never hit the USA with a nuclear weapon.
