The Vice Media co-founder was invited to speak to NYU's College Republicans at the school's Kimmel Center on Washington Square South near Thompson street.
"If he doesn't respect people's lives, we don't need to respect his words", one protester, who identified herself only as Leah, said of McInnes.
The New York City Police Department said 11 people were arrested outside New York University on Thursday during a protest against conservative comedian Gavin McInnes.
Those arrested face charges including drug possession, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and obstructing government administration, police said.
Beckman says McInnes tried to continue but stopped when protesters rushed into the room.
Gizmodo reported that McInnes barely made it into the NYU building.
Facebook Shares Rise On Fourth Quarter Revenue, Earnings That Beat Estimates
That's an 18 percent increase from the year prior and up from the 17 percent bump last quarter. Facebook said Wednesday that 1.86 billion people use the social network at least once a month.
"Whose campus? Our campus", the protesters chanted.
A photo uploaded to Twitter showed a "Make America Great Again" burning in front of the building.
The protest was organized by a group called NYU Anti-Fascists, who say McInnes is known for using "incendiary language".
The protests were apparently coordinated through Facebook under the name "Disrupt Gavin McInnes at NYU". When NYC Antifa began to share information about members of the group with their employers (in many cases leading to job loss), McInnes urged the Proud Boys to attend an Antifa concert and "wreck the shit" of the "f*ggots".
NY police officers stepped in to form a barrier between the protesters and McInnes supporters.
The New York clashes came a day after students at the University of California Berkeley similarly sought to block the campus appearance by Breitbart News editor Milo Yiannopoulos.
