Airtel said that call charges have been reduced by up to 90 percent to as low as Rs. 3 per minute on worldwide roaming while data charges by up to 99 percent to Rs. 3 per MB across popular roaming destinations. Additionally, the users will have to shell out no extra charges on data usage while on roaming, he added.
While other telecom giants like Airtel and Vodafone are offering 3 to 4 GB of data at heavily discounted prices, in comparison to just the prices they offered a year back, their offer still lags behind Jio's 1GB per day data limit.
Not only calls but also SMS will also be roaming free. "The bill shocks are creating a lot of dishonest in the minds of customers".
"It is time that I call upon the entire fraternity of the telecom sector to come together to kill the global roaming tariffs that are presently prevalent".
Commenting on the changes to the roaming plans, Gopal Vittal, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (India & South Asia), Bharti Airtel, said: "This marks the death of national roaming and the whole country will now be like a local network for our customers".

In its ongoing feud with new comer, Reliance Jio, the telecom has been gearing up to offer incoming calls and SMSes on national roaming free of cost, the report quoted sources familiar with the matter.
Sunil MIttal, the Chairman of GSM Association (GSMA), has declared a war on roaming with the promise that these charges will be a thing of the past.
Jio, which marked Ambani's re-entry in telecom space after a decade with free voice calls for life and free data for a promotional period that was extended until March 31, will offer existing users unlimited services for a year at a monthly charge of Rs 303 and one-time membership fee of Rs 99. Data charges while on roaming will stay the same with one data pack valid across the entire country.
Bharti Airtel Chairman Sunil bharti Mittal has also appealed his global counterparts as well as telcos in India to collaborate on the worldwide roaming issue so that customers get a seamless and affordable experience.
Airtel has already launched International Roaming packs for all major countries across the world.
