The Louisville Cardinals lost to Duke, 81-77 Thursday afternoon in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals.
With 2:51 remaining, Clemson cut the Duke lead to just one, before first-team All-ACC guard Luke Kennard, Tatum and Jackson proceeded to score the Blue Devils' next 10 points to ensure a Duke win.
"I think some losses early in the season kind of like hurt us a little bit, but I think down the line during ACC play we picked up a few big wins, especially against - upsetting at Louisville and now Virginia Tech", guard Brandon Childress said. They nearly knocked off Duke at Duke, Miami at Miami, Virginia at home, Syracuse in the last seconds, Virginia Tech twice, Florida State at home and Duke again in the ACC Tournament.
Neither team shot particularly well in the first 20 minutes, but Clemson was guilty of nine turnovers that were turned into eight Blue Devil points.
"Any port in a storm, so to speak", Krzyzewski said.
Allen was fouled shooting a 3 with 8:58 left, a call that got about equal parts boos and hoots.
Brown averages 18.3 points, 3.6 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 steals, and is the only player in the nation making more than 49 percent of her field goals (49.0), 40 percent of her 3-pointers (40.6) and 90 percent of her free throws (92.2). "They played great. They deserved to win".
Colts trade Dwayne Allen to Patriots
Allen, an effective blocker and big-bodied redzone target, has three years and just over $17 million remaining on his contract. Gronkowski has been injured often during his seven-year career and Allen is more than a suitable insurance policy.
"We had an awareness on him", Jones said.
Allen drew a one-game suspension by Coach Mike Krzyzewski in December after he tripped Elon's Steven Santa Ana during a game in Greensboro.
The Tigers still trailed by just three after Kennard answered with his first of two late baskets, but Elijah Thomas missed a wide-open layup then committed a needless foul on the ensuing Duke possession.
"They attacked us so much in the start of the second half, we were on the bottom of a hill covered with snow catching a sled", Krzyzewski said.
One bright spot for Louisville was the outstanding all-around performance by sophomore wing Deng Adel, who had 21 points and five rebounds, hitting 7-of-14 shots - mostly on aggressive drives - and 5-of-6 free throws. "They continue to tell me to stay aggressive".
Coach Roy Williams and the Tar Heels are poised to defend their ACC tournament title from a year ago. "[Man-to-man] was what we were built off of, but obviously in moments, it works, and today it worked for us".
The slow finish for both teams likely cost them come tournament selection time this Sunday. "But we've just got to keep our heads up and get back in the gym".
