John Delaney, chief executive of the Football Association of Ireland, said Irish football had lost a "true great of the game" following McBride's death.
A statement from Glentoran read: "Deepest heartfelt condolences from all at Glentoran to Ryan's family and to our many friends at Derry City".
The cause of death is not yet known.
The captain of Derry City football club has died unexpectedly at the age of 27, it has been announced.
Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill also offered his condolences to McBride's family, describing the footballer's death as "a tragic event".
The FAI will pay tribute to McBride at Friday night's World Cup qualifier against Wales at the Aviva Stadium.
He leaves his "heartbroken" father Lexie, sisters Colleen, Siunin and Caitlain and partner Mairead.

He too was elected by voice vote against the Congress candidate Govindas Khonthoujam. Several Opposition members objected to the presence of state BJP unit president K.
His last match was a 4-0 drubbing of Drogheda United in the League of Ireland Premier Division on Saturday.
"I was therefore deeply saddened last night when I heard the news that Ryan had died".
McBride made his debut for Derry in 2011 and quickly became a fan favourite for his tough tackling defensive style.
League officials said: "We will remember his civility and humility off the field, his commitment and passion on it and the deep love he carried in his heart for Derry City Football Club".
It is the second tragedy to hit the club in just over a year following news that record goalscorer Mark Farren had passed away aged 33 after battling a brain tumour.
Ryan's funeral will take place on Thursday morning at St Columba's Church in Derry. One of the current team's players Josh Daniels lost his mother, sister, brother-in-law and two nephews after their auto skidded along a pier in Buncrana, Co Donegal plunging their vehicle into Lough Swilly.
FAI Director of Competitions Fran Gavin added: "I am shocked at the sad news of Ryan's passing".
