Ricciardo's blunder in qualifying - spinning at a routine corner and crashing into a barrier - means he'll start from 10th on the grid in Sunday's grand prix in Melbourne.
The Australian had a wretched home grand prix: he crashed in qualifying; copped a grid penalty; started the race from pit lane; then his vehicle stopped on lap 29 of the 58-lap race.
Ferrari ace Vettel cruised to victory in Sunday's Australian Grand POrix, finishing nearly 10 seconds ahead of Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton.
"Get stuck in and have some fun", Red Bull's team radio told Ricciardo. Max was pushing Kimi hard all race, but we didn't have the pace of Vettel or Hamilton. From then on the pace wasn't too bad, I could follow him pretty well which was a nice surprise and I had no pressure from behind me.
"For me so far it's been a really troubled weekend", said Verstappen.
The Aussie's Melbourne visit went from bad to worse this afternoon when he was forced to abandon the race just over half way.

Ricciardo was also full of praise for his mechanics and engineers who worked hard to prepare the vehicle for the race after his qualifying crash and then fix it when it was brought back to the pits after stopping on track on the way to grid.
Two other cars retired before Ricciardo stopped again, this time at turn three on the 28th lap, with what appeared to be trouble with his left front wheel.
"It's okay, obviously I'm disappointed today, but I'll wake up tomorrow and be fine and ready to prepare to and go for China".
"We want great races, it starts with that", said new Formula One boss Chase Carey, Rupert Murdoch's former chief operating officer at News Corporation, said pre-race, before adding that another wish was to make the global racing circuit "a great business for all our partners: the teams, the promoters, our sponsors and so on".
"We looked pretty strong this morning and then we tried a few things this afternoon but I don't think they worked in our favor", said Ricciardo.
"I think the vehicle behaved quite a bit better in the race than in qualifying", Verstappen said. I believe we've got a good basis and direction.
