The first pitch, when the Rays take on its division opponent and cross-bay cousin, the New York Yankees, is set for 1:10 p.m.at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.
New York Yankees starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, of Japan, delivers to the Tampa Bay Rays during the first inning of a baseball game Sunday, April 2, 2017, in St. Petersburg, Fla. He went seven innings and gave up only two earned runs in winning on Opening Day for the first time.
Chris Archer started the season by throwing a ball to Yankees leadoff man Brett Gardner.
Questions surrounded the depth of the New York Yankees starting rotation for most of the offseason and especially over the past few weeks leading up to Sunday's Opening Day.
But in their first game together in the lineup in a regular season, major league game, the trio mostly flopped.
"He's human", Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. Tanaka departed from the field only after 2 2/3 innings.
It is odd to hear that expectations for a baseball team from the Bronx, NY are anything other than a world championship, but after multiple seasons of either not making the playoffs or suffering an early exit from the postseason, the New York Yankees are in an unfamiliar position, and fans need to retool their mindset when it comes to success.

Longoria connected for a two-run drive in the second.
Morrison would add a solo home run in the third for a 6-2 lead.
Tim Beckham ($2900/$2100) could serve as a solid punt play in the hopes that the Rays get to Tanaka at home. (I kid. I kid.) Tanaka was able to escape the inning without allowing any more runs, but the damage had already been done. Only Steven Souza was hitless of the Rays' batters, and he had a walked.
Aaron Judge had a RBI double, while Starlin Castro and Chase Headley each had three hits for the Yankees. Archer allowed a base runner but left the first inning with a shutout intact.
The catcher almost came through, but his bloop down the right-field line fell just foul.
Tampa Bay's opening-day pitcher went from first-time All-Star in 2015 to 19-game loser previous year. "There were some great at bats with two outs continuing the inning and then we got some big hits after that".
