Notably, Steve Bannon attended a National Security Council meeting shortly after news reports surfaced that he had been removed from the council by President Donald Trump. The move drew criticism from some members of Congress and Washington's foreign policy establishment.
Trump's national security adviser, Army General H.R. McMaster, was given the responsibility for setting the agenda for the council's meetings. Flynn, who is seeking immunity from prosecution, was sacked by President Cheeto Face for not disclosing to the president of Vice Sith Lord Mike Pence the extent of conversations he had with Russia's ambassador to the U.S., Sergy Kislyak, before Trump's inauguration.
Bannon, a former Breitbart News executive, had no objections to his removal, a source familiar with the decision told ABC News.
A new memorandum about the council's composition was published Wednesday in the Federal Register.
Now the spin seems to be that they knew there was something sketchy about Flynn all along and so they tasked Steve Bannon (!) to keep him on the straight and narrow.
A White House official also told The Atlantic much of the same story, saying Bannon's departure from the NSC had been planned from the beginning.
'Mother of all bombs' killed 94 ISIS fighters, Afghan officials say
The massive bomb terrified villagers 20 miles away across the border in Pakistan with a blast they described as earsplitting. The statement said it is the responsibility of Afghans, not the US , to remove the Islamic State group from the country.
With Flynn out of the picture and McMaster in charge, Bannon is no longer needed, according to the unnamed official.
Bannon's addition to the NSC sparked concerns from Trump critics, who said it was inappropriate for the political adviser to play a role in national security matters.
"No matter what his role is, Mr. Bannon's damaging influence on this administration should not be underestimated and is apparent in the actions President Trump has taken in his first days in office".
Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert also had his role reduced in the shakeup; however, Bossert can still call a meeting of the Homeland Security Council, remains on the Principals Committee and can attend NSC meetings, the administration official said. "I was put on to ensure that it was de-operationalized", Bannon was quoted as saying.
McMaster succeeded Michael Flynn at the NSC in February.
