TGR Design, the golf course design firm owned by Tiger Woods, and Big Cedar are paying tribute to Springfield native Payne Stewart, victor of three major titles on the PGA tour, by naming the new course Payne's Valley.
Johnny Morris and Tiger Woods expect the new course to open sometime in 2019.
Woods' bond with Stewart - whose wife Tracey was in attendance for the announcement - was strong and he's not taking the responsibility of being involved in this legacy course lightly.
There's no indication of when he'll play again - and it'd seem trying to play the U.S. Open at Erin Hills in June, a very long course with rough accustomed to that major would be inadvisable for someone with a bad back.
"[The Masters] probably wouldn't have been the best place for Tiger to start the year out after this most recent setback, and I think we should probably look, maybe something just after The Players Championship", Begay said on "The Rich Eisen Show". Prices for the public course have not yet been determined and the cost of the development was not addressed in the news conference.

"The back is progressing", he said.
Payne's Valley named after legendary Springfield golfer Payne Stewart. "The second shot, I stiffed it".
The TGR Design firm has four courses open worldwide, with Bluejack National in Montgomery, Texas; El Cardonal at Diamante in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; The Oasis Short Course in Cabo San Lucas and Jack's Bay in Rock Sound, Bahamas. It was really cool to go and play a country club because the greens were so nice and manicured and I had never seen anything like it.
"I grew up on public courses". The Bass Pro founder knows the Tiger Woods brand will give this course worldwide attention.
The golf course development has kept Woods busy as he recovers from back surgery. "I have traveled all over the world and played all over the world".
