Aam Aadmi Party on Wednesday expelled its senior leader from Amritsar Upkar Singh Sandhu over alleged anti-party activities, a day after he criticised the decision to make Sangrur MP Bhagwant Maan, the party Punjab unit chief. He has replaced another comedian-turned politician Gurpreet Ghuggi who was appointed as state convener of Punjab amid crisis in party cadre following the sacking of Sucha Singh Chhotepur.
According to Ghuggi, he attempted to rope in several high-profile leaders for the Punjab elections, but was not allowed to by the party. The AAP had on Monday had restructured its Punjab unit by appointing Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann as State convener and Sunam MLA Aman Arora as co-convener.
Not just Khaira, outgoing convenor Gurpreet Singh Waraich also, expressed his dismay over the manner this new selection took place.
Reacting to party's decision to suspend another senior leader, Patiala MP Dr Dharamvira Gandhi who was suspended from party two years ago said, "AAP came with an ideology, but with that ideology gone for a toss, the party has also lost its standing".
How major U.S. stock market indexes fared on Tuesday
Marriott International jumped 6.4% to $102.50 after reporting stronger-than-expected earnings for the latest quarter. Apple rose 0.64 percent to end at $153.99, giving it a market valuation of $802.9 billion, a first for a US company.
Bhagwant Mann was backbone of the AAP's campaign during the concluded assembly polls in Punjab.
He said the entire election process of appointing the new state chief was "fake and unfair" and the party adopted a "pick and choose policy" while inviting members for the election to the post. "I had asked why Arvind Kejriwal, Sanjay Singh and Durgesh Pathak could not come to Punjab after losing the elections to boost the morale of the workers". This is not the same party I had joined. "How can they have a condition "don't drink now", because that itself implies he is a drunk", said Mr Ghuggi. He said he would reach out to those upset with decisions, including his appointment. He is expected to reach Punjab "in a few days", and added that his best wishes are with Ghuggi.
Ghuggi, however, didn't rule out the possibility of joining another political party. On the other hand while stating that AAP leadership had offered him the Lok Sabha seat, Sandhu said he didn't want to pursue an active political life but wanted to serve the people in his individual capacity.
