The request: "Alone in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump began the discussion by condemning leaks to the news media, saying that Mr. Comey should consider putting reporters in prison for publishing classified information, according to one of Mr. Comey's associates".
A look at key moments in Comey's tenure, the lead-up to Trump's decision to fire him and developments since then.
It promises to have grave implications for the longevity of an administration that appears to slip deeper into utter disarray by the hour.
The White House vigorously denied it all. Trump's admission that the Russian Federation investigation was a motivating factor has legal scholars debating whether he obstructed justice.
Indian American Democratic Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi termed the revelations as "a serious breach of the law".
Then there was the Comey firing itself, which Trump even admitted had something to do with the Russian investigation.
He also published his letter to the FBI's acting director, Andrew McCabe, urging him to provide all of Comey's documents on meetings with the president within a week.
"It's time for Comey to testify before Congress", said Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL). He would be grilled on what Trump actually said in their Oval Office meeting on February 14 that is now at the center of the political hurricane.
He and other Democrats said Comey must testify before legislators about his conversations with the president.
But that may be changing.
Chaffetz tweeted later: "I have my subpoena pen ready".
"The country is being tested in unprecedented ways".
President Donald Trump listens before speaking at the 36th Annual National Peace Officers' memorial service, Monday, May 15.
"I don't have any doubt you're not becoming a serial, entrepreneurial Republican", Kasich said in return. "I tell you. He is a very believable guy".
White House Shies Away From Acknowledging Western Wall Part of Israel
Israel occupied the West Bank and east Jerusalem in 1967 in moves never recognised by the global community. In the wake of the turmoil, Trump's visit Israel next week could certainly prove to be a contentious one.
It's tough to believe Trump was clueless enough to think he could arrange such a meeting without anyone finding out and raising a storm about it.
For what it's worth, House Speaker Paul Ryan's spokesperson, AshLee strong, has communicated her boss' apparent agreement with Chaffetz on this issue: "We need to have all the facts, and it is appropriate for the House Oversight Committee to request this memo".
A Comey hearing would instantly become one of the most significant congressional appearances of modern times.
"An FBI agent's contemporaneous notes are widely hold up in court as credible evidence of conversations".
That intervention made him a hero for Democrats. But they came to despise Comey for his leading man role in a later drama, the probe into Hillary Clinton's email server. He intervened late in the campaign over a new batch of emails found on the laptop of Anthony Weiner, the husband of the Democratic nominee's aide Huma Abedin.
Trump lauded Comey for his conduct.
Chaffetz asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation to turn over the Comey memos "no later than May 24" - which is next Wednesday - as the request garnered the support of House Speaker Paul Ryan.
"If these reports are true, the president's brazen attempt to shut down the FBI's investigation of Michael Flynn is an assault on the rule of law that is fundamental to our democracy". However, in a spectacular twist of stupidity, the president pissed on all that and once again told NBC News it had nothing to do with any recommendation.
Following several controversies over the past few weeks, there have been some renewed calls for Trump's impeachment. But the White House has provided differing accounts of the firing.
More and more people are calling for Donald Trump's impeachment as his administration finds itself increasingly racked by scandal. It is vital that Congress obtain these memos and hear public testimony from former Director Comey.
Comey's memo, an apparent effort to create a paper trail of his contacts with the White House, would be the clearest evidence to date that the president has tried to influence the investigation, the Associated Press reported. "Trump has made admissions about that".
"Are you starting to lose confidence in President Trump?"
"'Close it down' is an instruction to stop investigating President Trump's campaign", CNN senior legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin told CNN's Wolf Blitzer Tuesday.
A damning performance by Comey could further add to their doubts and leave Trump in deep political peril if his alleged missteps persuade even a Republican Congress to contemplate impeachment proceedings.
