"Brothers and Sisters" went to make them one of most famous and successful bands of the 1970s, but growing disagreements, drug and liquor usage and bad blood when Allman (who was then married to Cher in a short-lived union) testified against their manager in a drug case, saw the group disband in 1976. As a composer, he wrote songs that not only were FM radio hits back in the '70s but eventually became popular with an entirely new generation of Allman Brothers fans. He canceled the remainder his 2017 tour back in March.
"I think it's because you're doing something you love", Allman said in 2011. In those years, he left and rejoined the band several times. Gregg Allman's early aspiration was to become a dentist. Later that year, he cancelled more dates, citing a throat injury. In addition to blues, the band also was known for its crystal guitar harmonies between Duane and Dickey Betts, jazz influences and a free-wheeling approach that sometimes led to 20-minute songs.
Gregg was the band's lead singer, keyboardist and a key songwriter.
Light also felt that Allman had a keen sense of his and his band's place in music history, and the wild days at the height of their fame, all the while hanging onto the Southern humility and charm he was known for.
The Allman Brothers Band began to reach mainstream success by the early 1970s, with their live album At Fillmore East representing a commercial and artistic breakthrough.

In his 2012 memoir, "My Cross to Bear", Gregg Allman described how Duane was a central figure in his life in the years after their father was murdered by a man he met in a bar.
Ultimately, Light recalls, Allman saw himself in another league from numerous bands the Allman Brothers inspired.
Gregg Allman was just one year younger than Duane. Gregg Allman was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. Sadly on October 29, 1971, Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident on Macon, GA.
Allman is survived by his wife, Shannon; his sons, Michael, Devon and Elijah Blue; his daughters, Island and Layla; and three grandchildren.
The news of Gregg Allman's death sent shockwaves of sorrow throughout the entire rock-loving community on Saturday afternoon. It featured performances by Allman and by contemporaries and inheritors like soul singer Sam Moore, country star Vince Gill, Widespread Panic and steel guitarist Robert Randolph, another jam-band favorite.
In a profession that sees superlatives thrown around carelessly, Allman truly was one of a kind; a legend.
