Organizations like The American Legion and VFW are often the places to host community events for Memorial Day, but when the holiday's over, members say it can be a struggle to get veterans involved.
"For the student veterans who participated today, Memorial Day is not about the beginning of summer and BBQs", said Office of Veteran Student Services Director Kenith H. Scott.
"These guys, these gals, they love their country more than life and so they gave up all", said Robert Balnicky, who fought during World War II. That's down to less than one half of a percent today guaranteeing that more Americans really.
"Today I wanted to be with my grandfather who is a Marine veteran and I also wanted to celebrate the veterans who have died during the war and out of the war", says Lyanna Smith, a 6th grader at Marietta Middle School. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved Memorial Day from May 30th to the last Monday in May.
Veteran Smitty Mealy is a member of American Legion's Howland Post 700, "We can go to bat for them and break through a lot of red tape for them". Businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags. The caretakers at national cemeteries don't take long weekends, because by law those cemeteries can't close for more than 48 hours at a time. "That means something to us because we're honoring them by paying respect to them and showing them that they are not a forgotten soldier", Payne said.
"Past history has tried to regulate the status of those who gather and for men those who hunt", he said.

The sea of red, white and blue is a regular sight on Memorial Day in Frankfort Square.
The Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery held a ceremony Monday morning to honor those who died in combat.

Area officials, including Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-Willsboro), were there to take part in the Legion's annual ceremony.
Douglas County has hundreds of war dead to honor this holiday weekend, according to a list compiled by the Lawrence Journal-World.
