New York, California and 11 other states representing almost 40 percent of the USA economy, mayors of about 200 cities, and leaders of business giants including Amazon, Apple and Target have signed pledges to keep reducing their fossil-fuel emissions after President Donald Trump announced he would withdraw the US from the 2015 Paris climate accord.
The Washington Post-ABC News survey, taken from June 2-4, found only 28 percent of citizens support the decision.
Despite some Republicans saying the Paris Agreement would hurt the US economy, some business leaders and analysts disagree with Trump's withdrawal.
Former President Barack Obama's target of 26 to 28 percent greenhouse gas level reductions by 2025 based off 2005 emissions levels mostly missed the mark, according to an analysis in January by the Rhodium Group. On Tuesday, he signed agreements with Chinese officials and pledged they'd work together on clean energy development and cut emissions. "So, as we look at doing things offshore, as we look at changing our pollution standards, as we look at seismic testing, that could pose a huge challenge to the quality of life here", Mayor Keyserling said.
President Trump may have just done more than anyone in history to reverse global warming, as the Star's June 3 headline indicates: Nations galvanized against U.S. decision on climate pact.
The Plot Thickens in Trump Probe
Senator, Congressman, and Ambassador, was asked by fellow Republican, senator John McCain , if the report were true. Coats and Rogers turned down his requests saying they were inappropriate, according to the report.
Brown also spoke at the Clean Air Ministerial in Beijing on Tuesday, which was the busiest day of his trip. China is set to implement a carbon trading program this year, and California has an ongoing cap-and-trade program that's linked to the program in Quebec, Canada. It is the leading producer of clean energy in the country.
Brown has been vocal on climate matters. Both pacts focus on broadening collaboration on environmental protection.
"In order to fulfill my solemn duty to protect America and its citizens, the United States will withdraw from the Paris climate accord", Trump said. China and the Obama administration negotiated the deal, and China has vowed to stay in it. The county also buys renewable energy. One form of that approach that goes a long way toward protecting people with lower incomes is a carbon fee and "dividend," meaning the carbon fees collected from fossil fuel companies immediately go out the door to all households on an equal basis.
In May 2015, then Prime Minister Perry Christie told Parliament that with 80 per cent of The Bahamas' land mass within one metre of sea level, climate change was a growing threat.
"China's economy is huge; their role in the world is huge, and they're going to be leaders in this space by orders of magnitude", said Jim Wunderman, CEO of the Bay Area Council, an advocacy group for the region's businesses, which helped host the ministerial a year ago and brought a delegation to Beijing during Brown's visit.
