ST. LOUIS (AP) - A man under investigation after his daughter's body was found in an IL garage said in a jailhouse interview Thursday that she choked to death accidentally, and his wife found the place to hide the body. The woman reportedly told shelter workers that she had escaped after being held captive in her Las Vegas apartment and sex trafficked by her husband for the last two years.
The surviving children are now in protective custody and did show signs of abuse, according to Las Vegas Police.
Information from a woman who said her husband forced her into prostitution led investigators from Las Vegas to IL, where they found the decomposed body of a child inside a garage.
Alyssa was the youngest of three girls, each born 16 months apart, according to her maternal grandmother Christine O'Dell.
She said that Quate forced her into prostitution for two years and physically abused the children. No charges have been filed in his daughter's death. His bail was set at $23,000 cash on the previous charges.
Quate, 34, adamantly denies that he hurt his two daughters or forced his wife into prostitution. She also accused Quate of killing their daughter and putting the body in the garage of a vacant home in Centreville, Ill. No charges have been filed yet in the girl's death. "I begged her to get a real job", he said. "She also gave us some very disturbing details that she wasn't allowed to communicate with the children, she was forced to stay in a bedroom, the children could not speak with her and also the children were never allowed to leave the house", Las Vegas Police Department Lt. Raymond Spencer told KMOV.
Senators to ask about Trump pushback on Russia investigation
More than three-quarters of independents say they trust Trump's statements about Russian Federation "just some" or not at all. Still, Trump supporters say they are willing to step in to help the White House deflect any accusations from Comey.
But Quate hasn't had a single run-in with Las Vegas police, Henderson police or North Las Vegas police. Real estate records obtained by The Associated Press show Quate lived in the Belleville home that was being examined. She told officers her husband killed their then-6-year-old daughter years ago when they lived in IL.
"I'm not the monster she's making me out to be", he said. Officers in Nevada are working with the Metro East authorities who are investigating the child's death, she said.
Neighbors told a reporter from KTNV-TV in Las Vegas that they frequently heard yelling coming from the apartment. The wife was charged in March 2015 in St. Clair County with a retail theft case that was later dismissed. Ray Spencer. "I will tell you just in the 19 years of law enforcement it is one of the cases I will never forget".
A neighbor who wants to remain anonymous says Jason Quate and his twin brother grew up with their adoptive parents in a house along Lebanon Avenue.
He also addressed a statement he made to the Las Vegas TV station on Wednesday - that his wife had told him in 2013 that she had found a family to adopt their daughter. And he says it was his wife's idea to move to Las Vegas and become a prostitute.
