CORNISH: That's NPR's Hansi Lo Wang in Belleville, Ill. What did she say?
After getting out of a black SUV that drove down Rolling Hills Lane from the Hodgkinson home, Sue Hodgkinson stood next to a federal agent in front of a gaggle of reporters. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) determined both were purchased legally, the FBI said Thursday. "I talked to a lot of people throughout yesterday who went to school with him and said everything was he was always just a normal guy, kind of quiet. I can't wrap my head around it", she said. She declined to answer questions about her husband's political views.
The wife of James Hodgkinson said her husband told her he was going to Washington, D.C.to "work on taxes" and "change the tax brackets".
Stephen Brennwald, an attorney who said he saw the man every time he visited the facility recently, said he never recalled him talking to anyone.
"I just want you to all go away and leave my neighbors in peace", she said. "She was really unhappy there", Moreland added. She says she didn't know a lot about what her husband, 66-year-old James Hodgkinson, did between January and March because she was busy with her job at a tax firm. It was parked across from the scene of the shooting.

Trump announced his intention to nominate Rosenworcel late Tuesday, and Pai was quick to voice his support for the move. But there have been increased rumblings in DC circles that she's looking to leave at the end of June.
The wounded Capitol Police officers were identified as David Bailey, who was treated for a minor injury, and Crystal Griner, who was shot in the ankle. "We need to have free speech, we need to have spirited discussions, we need to not make it personal or demonize people". And we know that the shooter was politically active.
"You've had a series of things that send signals that it's OK to hate Trump, it's OK to think of Trump in violent terms, it's OK to consider assassinating Trump", said Newt Gingrich, the former Republican speaker of the House and informal Trump adviser, during an interview on Fox News. And she thinks that the community here will rally to support his family. Here's what she said. "I've been careful to clarify it moving forward", Collins said on MSNBC.
In a 2010 letter, he wrote, "I don't envy the rich; I despise the way they have bought our politicians..." And people are pretty good around here.
Throughout the day, Alexandria residents who had had chance encounters with him continued to look back on them. "I think it's bad", Reis said.
"Hate" - it's an abstract word in the ongoing culture war, where you are branded as a "hater" by declaring that marriage is one man and one woman, or suggesting that illegal aliens are in the USA illegally.
WANG: Well, it's a small town, and parts of it are pretty rural, including where the shooter's home is. The St. Clair County Sheriff's Department responded. The assailant, who had nursed grievances against President Donald Trump and the GOP, fought a gun battle with police before he, too, was shot and later died. It was pretty close. The Chicago Battered Women's Network's most recent Court Watch Report from 2013 lists dozens of cases in which protective orders were denied after abuse charges were dismissed, or inappropriate statements were made - such as when one judge told a woman to simply "learn how to get along" with her abusive partner "given that they have a child together".
