"There wasn't a lot of time in spaces that were open to the sea".
Adm Aucoin said the Fitzgerald's crew had had to fight to keep the ship afloat after the Philippines-flagged container ship ACX Crystal hit it amidships at about 2.20am on Saturday.
"The water inflow was tremendous", Vice Adm. Joseph Aucoin, head of the U.S. Seventh Fleet, said in a press briefing on June 18.
The Navy said the dead USA crew were found by the divers.

The USS Fitzgerald sailed into port on Saturday evening, listing around 5 degrees, a US Navy spokesman in Yokosuka said.
The other two were being treated for lacerations and bruises and others injured were being assessed aboard the ship.
The 10,000-ton guided-missile destroyer and the ACX Crystal, a 29,000-ton container ship collided off Japan's Izu Peninsula. They are especially congested in the early hours of the day, with ships carrying cargo for early morning delivery in Tokyo.
Multiple US and Japanese investigations are underway on how a ship as large as the container could ram into the warship in clear weather.
Japan's public broadcaster NHK showed aerial footage of the destroyer, which had a large dent in its right, or starboard, side. Many scratches were also seen in the frontal area. Both Aucoin and the Japanese coast guard, however, said it was too early to determine what led to the collision.
The ACX Crystal had 20 crew Filipino crew members aboard and there were no injuries on that vessel, a Japanese Coast Guard official said. "This loss is something we all feel", he said. "I express my heartfelt solidarity to America at this hard time".
Families of the sailors are being notified.
