War for the Planet of the Apes is officially the box office champ, during a weekend that demands a close look.
Directed by Matt Reeves, the film opened to a decent start.
The movie earned $5 million in Thursday night previews alone, and then pulled in $22 million from 4,022 theaters on Friday.
"Planet of the Apes" took in an estimated $56.5 million in US and Canadian theaters, researcher ComScore Inc. said in an email Sunday, while "Spider-Man" collected $45.2 million to place second in its second weekend.
Despite the lower-than-expected debut numbers, War should have the needed box office stamina to become a midsummer hit.

The film, co-written by Nanjiani and the real-life Emily, his wife, rates a resounding 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and is credited by the New York Times with no less than "revitalizing an often moribund subgenre with a true story of love, death and. everyday comedy".

Despicable Me 3 placed #3 in its 3rd frame with $18.9-M from 4,155 theaters for a domestic take of $188-M.
In one of the biggest box office battles of the summer, it was apes over spiders.
The top ten films grossed an estimated $157.2M which was up 4% from previous year when The Secret Life of Pets stayed at number one with $50.8M; but down 12% from 2015 when Ant-Man debuted in the top spot with $57.2M.
Per ComScore, overall box office is down 0.4 percent from the same frame a year ago. Worldwide, the movie has brought in $102 million and has taken the throne, this weekend, which was previously held by "Spider-Man: Homecoming'".
Wonder Woman, in its 7th weekend fell out of the Top 5 to come in #6 with $6.9-M from 2,744 locations for a domestic box office of $380.7. Rise had a 3.23 multiple and Dawn had a 2.87; it is likely that War will hit around a 3.0 which would put it at around $170 million.
Wonder Woman has already blown past the domestic totals of fellow DC Comics movies Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad.
The #8 film is Pixar's Cars 3, which brought in $3.1 million in its fifth weekend. With that rating and a C CinemaScore, that's not likely.
