The Cutler-to-Miami rumors started when Tannehill suffered a knee injury earlier this month.
The Dolphins made a strong push for Cutler - Adam Gase, who coached Cutler in Chicago, convinced him to come out of retirement and postpone a fledgling broadcasting career - because the team knows it is going to be without Tannehill for quite some time and nearly certainly until next year.
"I don't know if retirement is the right word; I don't feel that anyone ever really retires from the NFL", Cutler said in a statement when the Fox job was announced in May.
That was not, however, an issue until Thursday when Tannehill sustained a new partial tear to the same ligament.
It has been quite a week for the Miami Dolphins' quarterback room.
At the time of the initial injury, Dolphins coach Adam Gase reportedly reached out to Peyton Manning as possible help to replace Tannehill. That season featured Cutler playing arguably the most efficient stretch of football during his Chicago tenure.
Trump approval rating drops to Nixonian levels of 33%
The poll was conducted from July 27 to August 1, with the university surveying 1,125 voters nationwide via telephone calls. FiveThirtyEight's average of polls gives Trump a 37 percent approval rating and a 57.5 percent disapproval rating .
Should Tannehill be sidelined, Matt Moore would step into the starting role barring any signings from outside of the organisation. He chose to retire after only receiving interest from the New York Jets. "So it was a surprise, and I think he has a lot of things to think through".
Will Cutler find success in Miami?
With Moore at the helm following the injury to Tannehill, the Dolphins still felt the need to bring in a veteran that could shoulder the team if necessary.
One of Chicago's biggest issues was protecting Cutler, mainly because of a lack of strength from their offensive tackles.
Aside from the connection between Gase and Cutler, Kaepernick generally doesn't fit the type of scheme Gase is looking to run in Miami.
Cutler's broadcast agent tweeted Saturday morning that Cutler hasn't made any decisions on whether he'd want to return.
