Johnson nuked a drive over sea and sand, one that traveled 341 yards by the time it stopped moving. He crushed a drive over the lake guarding the left-hand side of the fairway, some 80 yards past Spieth.
"It was a little bit easier coming in with a 60-degree on 18 and I hit a great shot in there to three feet".
"It was a lot of fun", Johnson told Sky Sports.
"To have seven birdies and be bogey-free in the final round was really solid".
Victor of this year's Open Championship, Spieth used a hot putter to separate himself from the rest of the field. "He won it. I thought that was a fun show", Spieth said.
Martin birdied four of the last four holes for a 67.
Spieth began the day in a four-way tie for the lead, but he quickly broke out of that with four birdies in his first eight holes at Glen Oaks Club on Saturday. Spieth had 18 feet for par and knocked it in, like the 24-year-old always seems to do. Spieth shot a closing 69 to Johnson's 66.
That meant Johnson would have to sink his 18-foot putt to force the playoff.
Johnson and Spieth finished regulation at 13-under 267.

Sweeter still was the timing of the victory, his fourth of the year but the first since he injured his back from slipping down the stairs in his socks and having to withdraw from the Masters the following day.

"[We] committed to targets that were away from holes, knowing I'm in the lead and knowing the putter is getting hotter each putt I hit".

Nicole Broch Larsen and Mo Martin shared the third-round lead, but it was home hope Brooke Henderson's rousing 63 that thrilled fans on Saturday at the LPGA Canadian Pacific Women's Open in Ottawa.
Rahm ran off three consecutive birdies early on the back and briefly was one shot behind, though he had stronger holes ahead of him and fell back.
"But I feel great about my game". Nicole Broch Larsen, a co-leader entering the day, had 70 to tie for third at 10 under with Cristie Kerr (69), In Gee Chun (70), Shanshan Feng (68) and Marina Alex (68). Kelly shot a tournament-record 19-under 197.
