Aircraft and more than 300 firefighters have been deployed to extinguish the blaze, which is only 5 percent contained, according to the fire service's latest updates.
Firefighters battled a fast-moving wildfire that broke out adjacent to the Riverside (91) Freeway near the Anaheim-Corona border in California on Monday afternoon and prompted immediate evacuations as it blackened about 2,000 acres within only eight hours, reports said citing the Orange County Fire Authority.
The fire started around 1 p.m. Monday, according to the Los Angeles Times, and it spread into Chino Hills State Park a couple hours later.
Corona High School's gym opened as the local evacuation shelter.
At least 500 homes remained under mandatory evacuation orders but authorities were hopeful some residents would be allowed to return.
15 dead and 20 missing on Dominica after Hurricane Maria
Nearly the entire 70,000 population has been affected, with 15 confirmed deaths - although this number is expected to rise. The eye of Hurricane Maria passed over the Commonwealth of Dominica last night and into the early hours of this morning.
Five helicopters with night-vision capabilities and three planes, including a DC-10, were involved in the firefight, Concialdi said. The strong winds once again eventually became a concern, grounding some of the helicopters and the big air tanker, CBS News reported.
Additionally, crews were setting backfires, hoping to keep the fire from crossing the freeway.
The Orange County Fire Authority said at least one building has been damaged or destroyed, while multiple structures are under threat in Corona.
But with some lanes closed, traffic was backed up for several miles and delays continued through the morning commute.
Two lanes of the eastbound 91 freeway near Coal Canyon Road remained closed Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol. "But we're asking the public, if possible, to avoid the eastbound 91", which was still reported to be congested early today. Adams Elementary School, Cesar Chavez Academy, Coronita Elementary School and Prado View Elementary School have announced they will be closed.
