Indonesia's Bali volcano has reached a critical stage with nearly 500 tremors recorded per day, local media reported Tuesday, citing Indonesian disaster agency.
Hoaxes have proliferated online, with videos of previous eruptions in Indonesia circulated as current events at Mount Agung.
Mount Agung is a stratovolcano with geographical and even mythological significance in Bali.
The 2010 Merapi eruption, which also forced hundreds of thousands of villagers to flee, was that mountain's biggest since 1872.
Waskita Sutadewa, spokesman for the disaster mitigation agency in Bali, said people have scattered to all corners of the island and some have crossed to the neighbouring island of Lombok.
An increasing frequency of tremors from the volcano indicates magma is continuing to move toward the surface and an eruption is possible, said National Disaster Mitigation agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.
Meanwhile, the Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA) is also rescuing dogs in the area and has set up a temporary shelter for relocated animals abandoned in the face of the potential eruption.
Trump keeps his word and imposes more sanctions on North Korea
Mr Trump said the measure would also disrupt other trade avenues for North Korea in efforts to halt its nuclear weapons program. President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe are discussing the ongoing crisis with North Korea .
Over 70,000 people have already evacuated the area as an eruption from the Mount Agung volcano seems imminent.
Balinese residents, global NGOs and the government have begun organising aid. The disaster mitigation agency recorded about 62,000 people live in the unsafe zone.
I Ketut Subandi, head of logistics at the village of Tana Ampo, said basic food items like rice, instant noodles, cooking oil and water were most needed.
The central government has set aside a relief fund of almost $150 million in case of an eruption.
"Business is getting low since Mount Agung's alert status was raised to the highest level", said Ketut Purnawata, manager of Dasawana Resort, which is in the same district as the volcano, normally popular with tourists and hikers. According to the seismologist, the centre has never recorded such high energy from Mount Agung.
