Russell Westbrook has agreed to a five-year, $205M contract extension with OKC, league sources tell ESPN. The five-year extension will be tacked onto his current deal, ensuring he makes $233 million over the next six seasons, including the upcoming season.
Westbrook, 28, is coming off a historic MVP season where he averaged 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists per game, making him the first player to average a triple double since Oscar Robertson did it during the 1961-62 season.
The date he selected to sign the extension may not have been by happenstance- September 29 just happens to be Kevin Durant's birthday.
A year ago at this time, the Thunder organization was preparing for life-after-Durant, and did not quite know how to recover from the surprising departure of the small forward; Thunder GM Sam Presti now wonders: Who is Kevin Durant?

Even if Paul George and Carmelo Anthony choose to bolt after this season, they should feel safe knowing that they'll have a superstar in the long term. "I am extremely grateful to Russell, his family and to our ownership for the commitment and support that they have demonstrated in supporting our vision for the Thunder". That security allowed the Thunder to pursue George and Anthony this summer. It will be the most lucrative contract in National Basketball Association history.
"Russell Westbrook's commitment to the Thunder organization since its inception in 2008 has helped propel us to great heights and stare down great challenges over our first decade", Thunder General Manager Sam Presti said in a statement.
"Like I said before, man, this is a place I want to be", Westbrook said on Monday.
As Wojnarowski noted, in 2016, Westbrook signed a three-year extension with the Thunder, assuring he wouldn't flee immediately in the wake of Durant's decision.
