Drivers of older diesel cars in London face an additional daily penalty of £10 ($13.20) to drive in the center of the city in a new program launched today.
London's air quality is far worse than minimum legal standards set by the European Union. Khan said that this was "the time to stand up and join the battle to clear the toxic air we are forced to breathe".
The measures comes after Britain's High Court ruled that United Kingdom government measures to combat air pollution were failing to comply with European Union rules on nitrogen dioxide limits.
The pollution is having a significant impact on human health, with a major Lancet study revealing last week that nearly 50,000 deaths in the United Kingdom past year can be attributed to the country's toxic air. That charge is in effect in the same zones at the same time as the T Charge, though it applies to almost all vehicles and costs £11.50 pounds per day ($15).
"As Mayor, I am determined to take urgent action to help clean up London's lethal air", he said.
