In the offseason, the Patriots traded a 2017 fourth-round pick to the Indianapolis Colts for Dwayne Allen and a 2017 sixth-round draft pick as a replacement for Bennett.
The Packers released Bennett on Wednesday with the designation of failing to disclose a medical condition.
The 30-year-old Bennett was present at Patriots practice Friday after he rejoined the team with which he won a Super Bowl ring last season.
Bennett, the team's big offseason free-agent acquisition, gave the Packers one of the deepest tight end groups in the National Football League with Richard Rodgers and Lance Kendricks. He plans to wear no. 88, as he did last season with the Patriots. In his seven games for the green and gold, he had 24 catches for 233 yards.
Chelsea director leaves club
Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo has "shocked" the club after reportedly resigning from his position at Stamford Bridge. Arguably owner Roman Abramovich's most trusted lieutenant, Emenalo has often been viewed as a controversial figure at the club.
Said tight end Richard Rodgers: "I think we know where we're trying to go".
Bennett was traded by Chicago to New England prior to the 2016 season and became one of quarterback Tom Brady's main targets when Rob Gronkowski was sidelined for the season after eight games following a back injury.
The veteran was added to the injury report after the bye last week with a shoulder injury.
McCarthy said he did not talk to Bennett about retiring, and he wouldn't speculate on whether there was any connection between Bennett's Instagram post, the injury and the team's sagging fortunes without Aaron Rodgers. Everything leading up to that, I can't really comment on it. Kendricks caught a career-high 50 passes for the Rams last season. He finished that season with 55 receptions for 702 yards and seven touchdown grabs.
