Authorities evacuated tens of thousands of people from 224 points on the Indonesian island of Bali this weekend after the eruption of Mount Agung, which spewed big clouds of potentially life-threatening ash into the atmosphere, CNN reported.
According to the Associated Press, the latest eruption on Mount Agung occurred around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency reported.
Per NPR, volcanologist Gede Suantika told Reuters "The activity of Mount Agung has entered the magmatic eruption phase, it is still spewing ash at the moment, but we need to monitor and be cautious over the possibility of a strong, explosive eruption".
Mount Agung, which has been experiencing increased activity since Tuesday, erupted for the second time on Saturday.
While the airport remains in operation, several major carriers have cancelled flights.
Satellite imagery Sunday showed the volcanic ash drifting east and southeastward towards Lombok Island.

Around 9 p.m., a 33-year-old man was transported to Metro after suffering a stab wound to the chest. The alcohol store proprietor and his 12-year-old child went outside to perceive what was occurring.
Australian airline Jetstar, which cancelled nine flights to and from Bali on Saturday evening, said most of its flights will operate normally Sunday after its senior pilots assessed it was safe to fly.
Authorities warned anyone still in the exclusion zone around the volcano, which extends 7.5 kilometres (4.5 miles) from the crater in places, to leave.
The aviation alert status for Bali has been lifted from "orange" to "red" but the airport will remain open until volcanic dust impacts the airport.
"What has been also prepared are the closest airports, where aircraft en route which could not reach Ngurah Rai have landed at", Herson said. Around 25,000 people have been evacuated from the "danger zone" on the slopes of Agung to hundreds of refuge shelters. Officials said that magma has now reached its surface.
The last time the volcano had a major eruption, in 1963, more than 1,000 people perished.
