And he really, really loves the military.
At a January 18 meeting at the Pentagon with senior military officials, Trump's idea became a "presidential directive", The Washington Post reported, citing unnamed officials. When Trump visited Paris last July for Bastille Day, he made no secret of his awe of the occasion's pomp and ceremony.
"The marching orders were: I want a parade like the one in France", said one anonymous military official.
"I'll let military friends speak for themselves, hoping they don't just salute Trump, but when I served in the U.S. Army, the LAST thing we wanted to do was parade", tweeted John McLaughlin, who served in the Central Intelligence Agency under the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations. Kirby said a big military parade in Washington is a bad idea. The most recent American military parades, though, have more often than not been associated with wartime.
Trump's parade would be a showcase of American muscle, but would also undoubtedly focus on his own role as commander-in-chief.
In the past, the United States military has only put on large-scale parades to celebrate a victory.
Parades are held on key dates in the North Korea calendar, celebrating the country's military or marking the birth of its founder, Kim Il Sung.
Plane skids off a runway at BWI; no injuries reported
The skidding wasn't suspected to be a pavement issue, however, since ice-free and temperatures outside were above freezing. In 2016, runway and taxiway excursions accounted for about a fifth of total accidents involving commercial aircraft.
While most countries host military parades, those on the scale of France or China are rare.
Then there is the context of Trump.
Critics have called the idea troubling because of its potential authoritarian overtones, noting Trump's apparent sympathies toward authoritarian leaders like Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
It is expected that the Army Military District of Washington, which oversees some military activities in the city, will be designated to coordinate parade planning, according to a senior defense official. This is a President who worked tirelessly to disqualify the idea of an objective news media. Expensive as it was, the 1991 parade was staged to mark the end of the Gulf War.
Tanks parade past President Trump, first lady Melania Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, and his wife, Brigitte Macron, during Bastille Day. "We're going to have to try and top it" the military official said, according to the Post. "Our military is the very best in the world, they are not to be reduced to stagecraft to prop up Donald Trump's image". And might usually makes right.
First, apparently no one has the ability to deter Trump from making wasteful, embarrassing and self-defeating requests of the military. The U.S. traditionally has not embraced showy displays of raw military power, such as North Korea's parading of ballistic missiles as a claim of worldwide prestige and influence.
"I have seen the president's most ardent defenders use the now-weary argument that the president's comments were meant as a joke, just sarcasm, only tongue in cheek", said Republican Senator Jeff Flake.
