"I apologize to my wife and my family", said van der Zwaan as he awaited sentencing.
Since his return in December 2017, Mr van der Zwaan has been walled up in a residential hotel in Washington and unable to return to London, where his wife is undergoing a hard first pregnancy, his lawyer said.
"I know what [Mueller] is doing", Rosenstein said.
Van der Zwaan is a 33-year-old Dutch attorney who is also the son-in-law of Russian oligarch German Khan, who is also linked to President Vladimir Putin.
Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort leaves court last October.
"This was lying during the course of a federal investigation", she added, noting that being able to "write a check and walk away" would not fit the seriousness of the crime or send the right message. Manafort is the only figure tied to the Trump campaign and charged by Mueller who hasn't struck a plea deal.
In pleading guilty, van der Zwaan admitted that he withheld and deleted emails, and also that he lied to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents about previous communications with Manafort protege Gates and a person who worked for Manafort in Ukraine identified as "Person A". His work seemed to focus on the former Soviet Union.

Whether he committed any crimes "arising out of payments he received from the Ukrainian government before and during the tenure of President Viktor Yanukovych". According to court filings, Manafort and Gates' work included lobbying Congress about the Tymoshenko report, which had been commissioned by the Ukrainian government.
Prosecutors have alleged that Manafort and Gates used an offshore account to secretly pay $4 million for the report. She told him his lies to federal investigators were not just a mistake and he should have known better because be is a lawyer.
The firm, which is co-operating with the investigation and which fired him a year ago, worked with former Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort and his ex-colleague Mr Gates at a time when they were both political consultants in Ukraine.
The existence and content of Rosenstein's memo, which was sent to Mueller on May 17, 2017, has not been previously reported, and its revelation appears to significantly hamper Manafort's defense strategy in the Russian Federation investigation.
Van der Zwaan told them that his last communication with Gates was in August 2016 and was an "innocuous text message", and that he hadn't spoken to Person A since 2014. Van der zwaan has since lost his job at Skadden. But this sentencing has nothing to do with Trump, the 2016 election, or Russian Federation.
Mr Mueller's indictment said Van der Zwaan "deleted and otherwise did not produce emails sought by the special counsel's office" and made a false statement about when he was last in contact with Mr Gates and "Person A", who has not been identified but is described as a long-term business associate of Mr Gates and Mr Manafort.
