The bureau's 2017 estimate for Suffolk is below its 2010 Census count of 1,493,350.
Three of the top five growing USA cities in 2016-2017 were in Texas.
"San Antonio tops the list with the largest population gain with an increase of over 24,200 people - an average of 66 people per day between 2016 and 2017", said Amel Toukabri, a demographer in the Census Bureau's population division.
The gain here was more than those reported for Irvine, Calif., and Henderson, Nev.; and just behind those recorded for Atlanta, San Diego and Austin, Texas.
St. Johns County's estimated population growth rate of 28 percent since 2010 ranked it as the 14th fastest-growing county in America, according to data released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Wednesday.
By means of comparison, Bend had 17,300 residents in 1980, topped the 25,000 population mark in 1993, hit 50,000 in 1999 and had 70,330 residents in 2005.
Texas cities dominated the list of those gaining the most population from 2016 to 2017. That includes Aurora and Carbondale, which each saw a population drop of fewer than 300 people, while Rockford's and Springfield's head counts fell by fewer than 1,000. In fact, for the second consecutive year, Seattle added more people in 2017 than all the King County suburbs combined.

Seattle's rate of growth past year - impressive as it was - represents a slight slowdown from 2016, when city registered a record 3.1 percent increase.
La Pine's population grew by a modest 40 people over the year, to an estimated 1,864, while Sisters grew to 2,701 residents by last July.

This is not the first time McKinney has been on the list of fastest-growing cities.
"We are definitely bucking the trend here in Owensboro", Candance Brake, president of the Greater Owenboro Chamber of Commerce, said Tuesday.
Lawrence Yun, chief economist at the National Association of Realtors, said Texas and Arizona cities have gained population because of relatively low home prices and relatively strong job creation that he attributes to low-tax policies drawing more employers.
