Dr. Stone noted that historically some western states have the highest rates of suicide, which could be related to the fact that they tend to be more rural. Ms. Spade and Mr. Bourdain are now among the approximately 45,000 suicides each year in the United States.
"These findings are disturbing", Schuchat says.
The Minnesota Health Department has increased efforts to identify at-risk communities to help reduce suicides.
In 2016, 745 suicides were reported in Minnesota.
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. But the signs aren't always clear.
Among those who committed suicide and who had known mental health conditions, 67.2% had a history of treatment for mental health or substance abuse conditions, and 54 percent were in treatment at the time of their suicide.
The CDC, the top USA public health agency, said individual states need to do more to boost suicide prevention "and address the range of factors contributing to suicide".
"Our data suggests that suicide is more than a mental health issue", Schuchat said.

Keltz believes talking about mental health and suicide will help erase the stigma associated with it.
"It used to be that we didn't even talk about mental health, and certainly not suicide".
Family members or friends concerned about someone who is struggling can ask directly about suicide and remove firearms or any other means the person is considering from the home, said Jennifer Stuber, director of Forefront Suicide Prevention at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Rather than speculating "why they did it", the public should focus on "how to prevent it", especially in the wake of celebrity suicides, Geddef said. Rates ranged from 6.9 per 100,000 in the District of Columbia to 29.2 per 100,000 in Montana.
"That includes a professional to help them with their thoughts of suicide", Egan said.
