Seattle is one step closer to hosting a 2026 FIFA World Cup game after the United States - in a three-way bid with Mexico and Canada - was granted staging rights to host the tournament during a vote here on Wednesday.
"Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026", Carlos Cordiero, the president of US Soccer told the delegates from more than 200 member nations following the vote.
"Football is the victor".
The 2018 FIFA World Cup begins Thursday with hosts Russian Federation squaring off against Saudi Arabia in the opening game of the tournament.
"The issue about who will get automatic bids to the '26 World Cup, if that's the question, that is not Concacaf's decision that's FIFA's decision and that will be made in the passage of time", Cordeiro said.
The 80 matches in the 2026 tournament, involving an expanded roster of 48 teams, will be held in stadiums scattered throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Before the United States hosted the World Cup in 1994, the sport was in a far different and inferior position.
Canada has never hosted the World Cup but staged the Olympic Games in 1976, the U17 World Cup in 1987, the U20 World Cup in 2007 and the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2015.
Morocco lost again with its fifth bid campaign in the past 30 years, including to the United States for the 1994 World Cup.
"Together we have done everything in our power to make the tournament a top-notch event, be it for a player, a fan, or a fan in front of the TV", he said.

Canada's venues would be in Edmonton, Montreal and Toronto, while the Mexican potential host cities are Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey. The NFL facility under construction in Inglewood could also be used.
The Football Association has not hosted the tournament since 1966, having failed in bids for the 1990, 2006 and 2018 tournaments.
