Firefighters gain on deadly California blaze

Fire officials say a massive blaze in Northern California has torched 1,018 homes in and around the city of Redding.
The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management deployed hundreds of firefighters to aid in fighting more than a dozen fires burning in California.
The huge Redding area blaze that has been burning for more than a week has displaced 38,000 from their homes and killed six people. The Ferguson Fire, which has claimed the lives of two firefighters, had burned more than 90 square miles and was 33 percent contained.

"We had this rain at the beginning of the year and all that did was promote the growing of grass and brush", McLean said.
In Lake County, evacuation orders were in effect for the 4,700-resident town of Lakeport along with some smaller communities and a section of Mendocino National Forest.

Two people have been killed in the fire, but no homes have been damaged or destroyed, fire officials said. Thousands more remain evacuated because of the blaze ignited July 23 by a spark from a steel wheel rim on a trailer towed with a flat tire.
Unlike the Carr Fire, authorities don't know what started Ferguson, which has now engulfed more than 58,000 acres.
He said the state really never left its drought status and several years of significant rainfall are needed to bring the state back. Redding Police on Tuesday asked for help from the public locating four people who are still missing.
"But you can't stop doing what you have to do, and you can't stop facing what you have to face", she said.
Cal Fire Mendocino said on Sunday morning that the Mendocino Complex Fire is at 10 percent containment.
