The trial of the former Trump campaign chairman had been delayed for several hours Friday, and the judge offered no explanation for the recess ahead of banker Dennis Raico's testimony.
US District Court Judge TS Ellis admitted on Thursday morning that he made a major mistake in the trial of President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort that could hurt the special counsel Robert Mueller's team, according to Politico.
They have argued Manafort disguised millions in income in offshore accounts, lied to banks and evaded taxes, which allegedly allowed him to purchase a luxurious life.
It was a hiccup as prosecutors headed toward resting their case against Manafort, proceedings that have been sometimes dramatic and featured tense exchanges with Mueller's prosecutors.
Prosecutors have said that Calk pushed through the loans for Manafort because he wanted a job in the Trump administration.
Federal prosecutors fight back against alleged unfair treatment by Judge T.S. Ellis III; Peter Doocy reports on the complaints.
California's Carr Fire Was Bad. The Mendocino Complex Fire Is Worse
The Ranch Fire was 225,001 acres with 21 percent containment and the River Fire was 48,663 acres with 58 percent containment. Forest Service reported that the fire crossed a highway Sunday evening, forcing crews to retreat from the fire's edge.
Early Friday, prosecutors said Ellis' crack "misrepresents the law" regarding bank conspiracy and "is likely to confuse the jury".
Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump's former campaign manager, faces charges for various financial crimes that are apparently unrelated to the election - though they do involve associates with ties to Russian Federation.
Though substantive, untelevised and far from a Trump-style reality show, the trial has featured some drama when star witness Gates testified against his former boss. Defence attorneys called Gates a liar interested in avoiding jail time under a plea deal. When the two were first brought face-to-face in the courtroom, Manafort's gaze bore down on his former protege and rarely wandered.
Manafort submitted the loan documents that day.
Gates has been the government's star witness in Manafort's financial fraud trial, testifying how, at the behest of his longtime boss, he helped hide millions of dollars in foreign income and submitted fake mortgage and tax documents. That distinction matters because banks regard loans for rental, or investment, properties as riskier and may impose restrictions, including on how much money they're willing to lend. But I want you to remember don't do that again.
And then, Ellis instructed Mueller team to try and focus their questions, before joking prosecutors aren't familiar with their own exhibits after they asked for a minute to pull out a piece of paper. One prosecutor noted that the judge had granted permission for the agent to attend. The outburst came when Judge Ellis learned that a witness may have been in the courtroom during another witness' testimony, and told the jury that the prosecution had acted improperly in allowing this, defying courtroom procedures. "You [the jury] [hav] ve got to put that aside".
