A weather system moving quickly toward the central U.S. Gulf Coast became a tropical storm Monday morning, bringing the threat of storm surges, strong winds and heavy rain to millions in the Southeast.
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA- The 5 p.m. advisory is out from the National Hurricane Center on Potential Tropical cyclone 7 and Brevard county could see heavy rains from the passing system through Tuesday.
Loyola will remain open on Tuesday, Sept. 4 and continue normal operations, despite Tropical Storm Gordon.
Florence was moving toward the west-northwest near 16mph and maximum sustained winds of 50mph with higher gusts late on Sunday evening.
There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is coordinating preparations for Tropical Storm Gordon that is expected to begin affecting the state Tuesday afternoon.

Several storm systems will bring flash flooding to the eastern USA from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes. Hurricane center experts still expect it to move northwest before it comes anywhere near Florida as it travels around the western edge of an area of high pressure. Tropical Storm Warnings are also in effect for inland areas of Collier, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. Highest winds had increased to 50 miles per hour, and the National Hurricane Center said Gordon could be near hurricane strength at landfall Tuesday night. The system may potentially move ashore anywhere from East Louisiana to East Texas Wednesday or Thursday as a tropical depression or tropical storm.
A tropical storm warning is in effect along the southern Florida coast from Miami to Naples, and along the Gulf Coast from Pensacola, Florida to Morgan City, Louisiana.
Combined with the warm waters in the Gulf and around the Florida Keys, tropical development is highly likely in the next 48 hours.
"The deepest water will occur along the immediate coast near and to the east of the landfall location, where the surge will be accompanied by large waves", the center said.
Tropical Storm Gordon is the Atlantic basin's seventh named storm of the year.
A tropical storm warning is in place from the Florida-Alabama border west to Louisiana.
